  • 2016 Women of Distinction Luncheon

    Monday, August 15, 2016

Throughout each year, Durrett Motor Company supports the missions of The Bridge Over Troubled Waters. Durrett Motor Company was a major sponsor of The Bridge Over Troubled Waters 18th Annual Women of Distinction Awards Luncheon at The Hobby Doubletree Hilton on Thursday, July 21st. This year’s theme was “Calling all Sheros” and the nominees showcased several heroes in their own right.

More than 30,000 incidents of family violence are reported in Harris County each year. The Bridge strives to be an agent of change, reaching 20,000 people each year through education, outreach and direct services to women and children in need; however, they can’t do it alone – they need the support and assistance of the community to make our community a better place to live and raise children. Each year, The Bridge honors women who have done just that through the Annual Women of Distinction Award Luncheon . The luncheon features a Silent Auction and all proceeds of the auction directly benefit The Bridge. The Bridge Emergency Shelter houses and provides services for up to 100 women and children every day. Less than 12% of The Bridge’s total budget goes to general and administrative expenses; the majority of donated dollars go directly to helping individuals affected by domestic and sexual violence; individuals seeking to rebuild their families and their lives.

There is no greater joy than to witness the healing and transformation of a family once torn apart by violence and/or sexual assault. Please visit www.tbotw.org to learn more about the programs and services provided by The Bridge.

This is the motto of Red Nose Day Fund. Everyone knows this day as the day when you can act silly and get away with wearing a red nose….for a great cause of course! What better way to embody the simplistic yet vivacious spirit of a child than the universal red nose? Red Nose Day is a “Fun-raising” campaign by the non-profit organization Comic Relief, Inc. Their mission is to have a world with justice, free from poverty through the power of positive entertainment and reach the kids who need it most. Through the Red Nose Day Fund, they have been able to raise over $1 billion globally over the last 25 years. Half of the money distributed this year will be spent in the USA and the other will be sent to the poorest areas of Latin America, Asia & Africa. Last year in 2015, they were able to provide over 7.8 million meals, over 170 thousand vaccines, and over 1 million preventative disease-fighting drugs to children and families with children.

  • Fashion Fiesta

    Thursday, April 21, 2016

Once again, Durrett Motor Company was a proud sponsor of The Bridge Over Troubled Waters Annual Fashion Show on April 14, 2016 at The South Shore Harbor Resort. The theme this year was Fashion Fiesta. The models were clothed by The Clotheshorse, JoS. A. Banks, and Mommie Chic and Me. The models included both men, women and children. The children really stole the show! This year’s Fashion Show raised $43,000 and all proceeds from the show will go to benefit the men, women and children that receive services from The Bridge Over Troubled Waters or “The Bridge” as many have come to call it. Durrett Motor Company’s table of guests raised 20% of the entire money donated that day with a whopping total of $8,500! Also, the original plan was to set up 32 tables for the guests but they ended up having to set up 35 tables all together! They sold out of tickets and were having to turn guests and vendors away! This was a monumental mile stone in The Bridge’s history grossing almost $25,000 more in proceeds than last year’s Fashion Show. The donations provide many services including but not limited to counseling, group therapy, budget support, 24-hour hotline, and 24-hour advocacy for victims of sexual assault. Every year the Bridge is able to help over 23,000 men, women and children.

  • Flood Safety

    Tuesday, April 19, 2016

In the wake of the recent floods, we want to make sure that you are reminded about flood safety. The single worst decision you can make in a flash flood is driving your vehicle into floodwaters of unknown depth. It's easy to misjudge the depth of floodwater, particularly at night. Sometimes the bridge or road masked by flood water may have been undermined or completely washed out.

    According to FEMA:

    • - Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control and potential stalling.
    • - A foot of water will float many vehicles.
    • - Two feet of rushing water will carry away most vehicles, including SUVs and pickups.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, water 1 foot deep typically exerts 500 pounds of lateral force on a vehicle. Once your vehicle is floating, the floodwater becomes your steering wheel.  If that water is moving, your vehicle could be swept away, tipped on its side or flipped. Rising water can enter your vehicle in a manner of minutes, even seconds. The best advice we can give is to never drive through flood waters of unknown depth. If you are stuck in your vehicle underwater, you need to act quickly:
    • - Find a pocket of trapped air, usually against the rear window or roof.
    • - Roll a window down slowly, take a deep breath and be ready to swim.
    • - If the window won't open, break the window with a rescue tool.

Next time there is a risk of flash flooding, take it seriously. Stay out of the water. Don't become a statistic.

  • We all know that we have to file our taxes by April 15th every year. But not this year…this year we have to file by April 18th. Why is it different this year? Well, it all comes down to a holiday that takes precedence over taxes. This year April 15th corresponds with Emancipation Day. Emancipation Day is normally held on April 16th which is the day that President Abraham Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act, the precursor to the Emancipation Proclamation, which in turn freed 3,100 slaves in the District of Columbia on April 16, 1862. Due to April 16th falling on a Saturday this year, they will be observing this holiday a day earlier on April 15th. The bottom line is that this holiday pushed the official deadline to the next business day. So that means all of us get to procrastinate on our federal taxes until Monday, April 18th. Hey, thanks, D.C.! And don’t forget, your refund check is a great down payment for that new car or truck that you’ve been wanting.
